Laidley Family Residence
Originally a modest single-story 1,400 SF home, the renovation nearly quadrupled the size of the residence, adding two additional levels and expanding the total to 5,300 SF.
The additional floors were built beneath the original home, embedded into the hillside. This was an enormous feat of engineering, ingenuity, and precision. A 35’ crib support was installed to support the building as it hovered above the new ground level, 6,750ft3 of soil were excavated, and a mammoth foundation system consisting of 30 piers were drilled with 12’ high retaining walls to stabilize the soil of the steep hillside.
The Façade is built from custom run clear red cedar with double garage doors which are flush mounted with the same material so just disappear into the wall of cedar, the only break being a custom laser cut entrance gate Beyond the cedar façade is a Japanese style garden, with a custom designed water feature, ipe deck with a walkable skylight and a wall of Ichi-shu-ban Japanese style charred wood.
Once inside the building it expands into a large open plan great room with a 10’ Calcutta Oro kitchen island and matching counters with top of the line appliances. A cold rolled steel fire surround marks the entrance to Fleetwood pocket doors which leave a 20’ wide opening onto a deck with town down views. The European white oak wide plank flooring and matching floating stair treads supported by cold rolled steel stringers connect the levels together. The level below consists of the bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms, the master having free standing soaking tub, steam shower with 10’ tall Calcutta Oro marble slabs covering the walls. There is a panic room with bullet proof door as well as a gym with flush mount LED lighting around the perimeter of the room in the flooring. The lower garden level has another guest bedroom with en-suite bathroom, full media room, kitchenette, wine room and garden with stone patio, fire pit and BBQ.
The whole lighting system is controlled by a Lutron system and each room has its own Sonos amp centrally located for perfect audio control.
